Seeking shelter? These bunkers are up for grabs

From backyard bomb shelters to kitted-out underground complexes, there are more bunkers for sale than you can imagine. Fear of a nuclear conflict in the 1950s and 60s prompted many citizens to build covert hideouts to hunker down in should the worst happen and these ultra-safe relics are becoming more sought-after during recent uncertain times.

So whether you’re looking for a comfortable home with an added layer of security, seeking a doomsday survival shelter, or searching for a truly unique piece of real estate that's ripe for restoration, these amazing subterranean sanctuaries could be for you. Click or scroll on to take a tour...

The Vivos Group

Vivos Indiana, Indiana, USA: $35,000

Secluded beneath the ground in the wilds of the American Midwest, Vivos Indiana is an ultra-safe shelter that can accommodate up to 80 people. Designed by Robert Vicino as a fortified haven to wait out any type of disaster, the subterranean hideaway is situated within a converted Cold War-era bunker complex and is strong enough to withstand a 20-megaton nuclear explosion.

The Vivos Group

Vivos Indiana, Indiana, USA: $35,000

The highly affordable bunker extends 10,000 square feet and a bed here will set you back just $35,000 per person. In fact, you might be able to bag a bargain as the listing quotes 'deep discounts for people with special skills.'

Kitted out with everything you could need, the underground bolthole is more like a comfortable hotel than a spartan military bunker. Think 600-thread-count sheets, plush carpets, flat-screen TVs, and reclining armchairs.

The Vivos Group

Vivos Indiana, Indiana, USA: $35,000

The impressive facility can accommodate residents for up to a year, with no need to venture up to the surface. Overflowing with luxury amenities, the shelter has a huge kitchen, a movie theater, an open-plan lounge, bathrooms, and cozy bedrooms, so there's no need to scrimp on creature comforts. Other highlights include pet accommodation, a gym area, and an indoor garden for growing fresh fruits and vegetables.

Equipped for all eventualities, the bunker also offers a makeshift infirmary, although we're not sure we'd fancy going under the knife here. The state-of-the-art facility is stocked with vital medical supplies, enough food and fuel for a year, and its own well, providing the bunker with a reliable supply of fresh water.

TM Realtors

Former post office and barber shop, Mississippi, USA: $55,000

If you'd prefer a DIY project, then this listing is sure to entice. These two structures were once a four-bedroom home and the former post office and barber shop of Tremont, Mississippi, but today they're vacant and in serious need of rescuing. Yet these abandoned buildings aren't what makes this real estate listing so interesting...

Head into the overgrown garden, behind the units, and you might just be able to spot a steel door that leads into a Cold War-style bunker or storm shelter.

If you're brave enough to open the hatch door, then a set of steps leads down into the bunker itself. Sadly, we don't know how big the shelter is, but according to the listing there's 1,800 square feet of interior in total, which likely takes all three spaces into account.

In need of a major cash injection, the buyer will need to arrange for water, electrics, and a backup generator to be installed, before the bunker will be usable.

Made up of a single room, the bunker is in need of a total overhaul and appears to show signs of damp, decay, and mold. But, with a little imagination, we're sure it could be turned into a very comfortable hideaway. If you fancy taking the property on, then it could be yours for just $55,000. TM Realtors has all the information you need.

Keller Williams Realty Black Hills

Former Black Hills Army Base, South Dakota, USA: $69,900

The bunker comes with a private lot and space for parking. As for the structure itself, it's formed from concrete and has a steel blast door that's entirely impenetrable. Inside, there's 2,080 square feet of space and it's a total blank canvas that's ready to be renovated as you see fit. Let's head inside...

Atlas E Missile Silo, Washington, USA: $1.2 million

Over in Lincoln County, Washington, you could snap up a former Atlas E Missile Silo for just over $1.2 million. Occupying 25 acres of land, the military unit was constructed during the Cold War period in 1959. Two earth-sheltered bunker homes, Montana, USA: $1.6 million

Dating back to 1989, the structures provide over 9,000 square feet of inside space in total. The first earth home measures around 2,500 square feet, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, while the second is larger at 6,000 square feet and was designed to accommodate many people. The latter is laid out over two floors and boasts a basement storage area, numerous small bedrooms, a master suite, 11 toilets, seven showers, and two kitchen areas.

The bunkers are on the grid, but each has its own backup power, central air ventilation system, fresh water well, and gravity-fed septic system, so you could survive even in the event of a disaster. Both homes could do with a makeover and currently are fairly basic in terms of facilities and design. Are you a prepper seeking an ultimate fixer-upper?

Amazingly, the bunker also features a unique, soundproof room that is equal parts creepy and cool. The room would certainly come in handy if you need to lay low. Other plus points include the estate's 7,200-square-foot outbuilding, which could be converted into an additional home, allowing the new owner to create a self-sufficient bolthole. It's no wonder the property cost an eye-watering $10 million to complete, according to the listing.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices

Doomsday bunker, Nevada, USA: $5.9 million

On first glance, this property looks ordinary enough, if not a little underwhelming. Yet there's far more to this family home in the Las Vegas suburbs than meets the eye.
