Fast food fan favorites

Fast food chains have fanbases as devoted as those of musicians or movie stars. We all have our go-to orders – whether it’s the iconic orange chicken from Panda Express or a classic Whopper from Burger King – and we tend to stick with them loyally. But have you ever wondered what the most popular menu item is at each fast food chain? We scoured the internet to uncover the most-ordered dishes Americans just can’t get enough of.

Click or scroll through our gallery to see the most-ordered item at your favorite fast food chains – some of them might surprise you.

Our selections are based on the most recent data available, and on the opinions of our well-traveled (and well-fed) team. This list is unavoidably subjective.

Arby's: Classic Roast Beef Sandwich

Arby’s is the world’s leading sandwich-focused drive-thru chain, with over 3,600 locations across the globe. Its undisputed fan favorite? The Classic Roast Beef sandwich – a simple yet iconic creation featuring tender, thinly sliced slow-roasted beef piled high on a toasted sesame seed bun. In 2024 alone, Arby’s sold a staggering 144 million of these beloved sandwiches, proving that sometimes, classic really is king. The Classic Roast Beef Sandwich's enduring popularity speaks to the power of nostalgia and no-frills comfort food, done right.

Burger King: Whopper

Since bursting onto the fast food scene in 1957, the Whopper has remained a fan favorite among burger lovers. So, it’s no surprise that it's Burger King’s most popular menu item. The global fast food giant sells over a billion Whoppers every year – and one bite makes it easy to see why. Each sandwich features a flame-grilled beef patty topped with fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce, creamy mayo, pickles, ketchup, and sliced onions, all nestled inside a soft sesame seed bun. It’s a bold, satisfying classic that's stood the test of time.

Chick-fil-A: waffle potato fries

We’re not often treated to a list of the most popular menu items at mega chain Chick-fil-A; however, the last time the brand revealed its most-ordered list, its chicken sandwiches surprisingly didn’t come out on top. The number one spot was instead taken by the brand's ever-popular waffle fries. These deliciously crispy waffle-cut potatoes are cooked in canola oil and generously sprinkled with sea salt to keep customers coming back for more. Sauces such as honey mustard and sriracha can be added for extra zing.

Chipotle: burrito bowl

While Mexican-inspired chain Chipotle doesn’t officially reveal its figures for its most-ordered items, foodies in the know suggest that the brand’s most popular item is actually the burrito bowl. These addictive bowls are filled with grilled meat or plant-based protein alongside rice, beans, or fajita veggies, and they come topped with guacamole, salsa, queso blanco, sour cream, or cheese.

Dairy Queen: Blizzard

Those with a sweet tooth can’t resist a Blizzard from Dairy Queen, which operates over 7,700 locations across more than 20 countries. The icy treat was first introduced in 1985, and the chain sold a staggering 175 million of them in the first year alone. Today, the Blizzard remains Dairy Queen’s star; it now accounts for roughly a quarter of all store sales. With global revenue hitting about $6.4 billion in 2024, Dairy Queen estimates it sells over 4,500 Blizzards every minute. With mix-ins ranging from Oreos and Reese’s to seasonal specials like pumpkin and cotton candy, the Blizzard continues to keep fans coming back.

Domino’s: pepperoni pizza

Domino’s is one of the world’s most recognizable pizza brands, serving up an astonishing average of three million pizzas every day across more than 21,300 stores in over 90 global markets. With over 34 million possible pizza combinations, the customization options are virtually endless – but in the US, one topping reigns supreme: pepperoni. It’s followed by other fan favorites like sausage, bacon, mushrooms, and yes, even pineapple.

In-N-Out: Double-Double

Founded in 1948 as California’s first drive-thru hamburger stand, In-N-Out has since grown to hundreds of locations across the United States. While its menu boasts popular choices like the Animal Style burger and the classic cheeseburger, the crown jewel is undoubtedly the Double-Double burger. This iconic sandwich layers two juicy beef patties and two slices of melted cheese with fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce, onions, and the chain’s signature spread – all inside a soft, freshly baked bun.

KFC: KFC Original Recipe Chicken

KFC is one of the world’s largest fast food chains, boasting over 30,000 restaurants across nearly 150 countries and territories worldwide. Unsurprisingly, its most beloved menu item is its iconic Original Recipe Chicken, crafted more than 90 years ago using a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices. Legend has it that this unique recipe was first scribbled on the back door of the kitchen, holding the key to the signature flavor that's made KFC famously finger lickin' good ever since.

Little Caesars: Hot-N-Ready Pepperoni Pizza

Little Caesars, founded in 1959, has not only grown into one of the largest pizza chains in the USA, but it has thousands of locations across 28 countries. The chain’s most-ordered menu item is the Hot-N-Ready Pepperoni Pizza – a cheesy, saucy classic that's loaded generously with slices of pepperoni. What makes it truly popular is the Hot-N-Ready promise: your pizza is ready and waiting, so you can grab your favorite pie within 30 seconds of walking in, no wait required.

McDonald’s: French fries

Arguably the world’s most recognizable fast food brand, McDonald’s now operates over 39,000 restaurants across more than 100 countries. While the chain is famous for its diverse burger lineup, its bestselling menu item is, somewhat surprisingly, its irresistibly addictive French fries. McDonald’s sells over nine million pounds of fries every single day; they've been an enduring favorite since they first appeared on the menu in 1949.

Panda Express: orange chicken

Fans of the American Chinese chain Panda Express won’t be surprised to learn that its bestselling dish is, without question, its iconic orange chicken. First introduced in 1987, this signature item now accounts for more than a third of the chain’s total annual sales. It features crispy fried chicken pieces, glazed in a sweet-and-sour orange sauce. Its widespread popularity has even been credited with fueling a nationwide craze for the dish, making orange chicken a beloved staple across the country.

Papa John’s: The Works

If you’ve never ordered from Papa John’s, you’re definitely missing out. Since its humble beginnings in a broom closet in 1984, this mega pizza chain has grown to thousands of locations worldwide. While the company admits that picking a favorite pizza 'would be like choosing a favorite child,' a 2022 blog post revealed that one of its most popular choices is The Works. This hearty pizza is loaded with a mouthwatering mix of pepperoni, Italian-style sausage, ham, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and olives – making it a go-to for fans who love a fully loaded pie.

Pizza Hut: pepperoni pizza

Pizza Hut’s most‑ordered classic is, predictably, pepperoni pizza. The chain uses roughly seven million pounds of pepperoni annually in the US, making it the go-to topping for millions of fans. Specialty pies like the Meat Lover’s – loaded with pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ham, and beef – also rank among the top sellers. Together, these beloved favorites keep Pizza Hut at the top of its game, balancing simple comfort food with hearty, meaty indulgence.

Popeyes: Classic Chicken Sandwich

Popeyes’ Classic Chicken Sandwich is nothing short of a fast food sensation – and it's the chain’s most popular menu item. When it launched in 2019, demand was so overwhelming that many locations sold out within days. In just 10 weeks, Popeyes sold over 14 million sandwiches, triggering long lines, a social media frenzy, and even a temporary nationwide shortage. The sandwich, featuring a crispy fried chicken breast on a buttery brioche bun with pickles and mayo or spicy sauce, has since become a defining item for the brand – and a heavyweight in the so-called chicken sandwich wars.

Smashburger: Double Classic Smash

One of the youngest fast food chains on this list, Smashburger was founded in 2007 and now has locations all over the world. Its most popular menu item is the Double Classic Smash – two Angus beef patties smashed on the griddle for a crispy sear, then layered with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, and Smash Sauce on a butter-toasted bun. Customizable add-ons like bacon, truffles, and jalapeños only amplify its fan appeal.

Taco Bell: Crunchwrap Supreme

Taco Bell doesn’t officially reveal its top-selling menu items, but the Crunchwrap Supreme is widely recognized as its bestseller – and with good reason. Originally launched in 2005, it quickly became a fan favorite, and it was once named the chain’s most popular item by sales. In fact, Taco Bell has sold hundreds of millions of Crunchwraps over the years. Built around a crunchy tostada shell layered with seasoned beef, nacho cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and a grilled tortilla wrap, it’s a handheld mix of textures and flavors that’s become nothing short of iconic.

Wendy’s: French fries

The most popular menu item at Wendy’s isn’t one of its juicy burgers or the iconic Frosty – it’s actually the chain’s simple French fries. After a 2021 revamp to keep them crispier for longer, fry sales took off. They now outsell everything else on the menu, thanks to their irresistible flavor, perfect texture, and wide appeal. Even the Baconator, which sold 68 million in its first 10 months, can’t top them. With profit margins as high as 90%, it’s no wonder fries have become the quiet powerhouse behind Wendy’s massive fast food success.

Whataburger: Whataburger

Unsurprisingly, the top spot at Texas-born Whataburger goes to its namesake Whataburger – the hefty 100% beef burger that inspired the brand’s name. Sold on a five‑inch bun with fresh toppings, it remains the chain’s most-ordered item. In fact, Whataburger produces more than 150 million of these each year. With over 1,100 restaurants in 17 states, and 60 million customers, the chain has come a long way since it was founded in 1950 as a humble burger stand.
