Art Deco manor house, Menorca, Spain

Built in the Art Deco Colonial style, this historic manor on the Balearic island of Menorca surrounds one of five mills in the city, which dates back to the 16th century. The three-story property sits on a 0.5-acre plot and offers an ample 10 bedrooms and five bathrooms.

Art Deco manor house: elegant arches

The 11,043-square-foot home epitomizes Art Deco style, with geometry at every turn. Elegant archways link capacious rooms featuring barrel ceilings and arched casement windows.

Black and white marble floors echo the opulence of the era, and much of the furniture was custom-made in the 1930s.

Art Deco manor house: relaxed living

There are three living rooms, a 645.8 square foot dining room, a grand library with original marquetry (a decorative wood-working technique), and a kitchen and pantry. The top floor, which is the old roof of the central mill, features a tower with views across the city to the bay.

Outside, there's a large terrace with a gazebo, a swimming pool, a barbecue area and plenty of Art Deco-inspired cane furniture. There are also two wineries – perfect for hosting a louche jazz party in the Spanish sun.

The beautiful property was previously for sale via Sotheby's International Realty for €3.9 million, or ($4.6m).

The Modern House

Shrubs Wood, Buckinghamshire, England

Constructed in 1934, this modernist gem in Buckinghamshire, England, is the epitome of the modern interpretation of a country house. Shrubs Wood, as the property is known, was designed by architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, and has been awarded a Grade II listing.

The home boasts an impressive pedigree of ownership, including Bridget D’Oyley Carte, owner of the D’Oyley Carte Opera Company and the Savoy Hotel, whose designs for the surrounding yard remain intact today.

The Modern House

Shrubs Wood: Le Corbustier inspiration

Inside, the home is bursting with original details, including joinery, metal window frames, and rich zebra-striped sycamore wood.

Other architectural statements distinctive of the Art Deco age include a sweeping curved staircase with concrete steps encased in glass. There is also a flat rooftop, among others, which embodies many of the five principles of architecture laid out by Le Corbusier – widely considered to be the disciple of Deco.

The Modern House

Shrubs Wood: spacious interiors

The home is entered by means of a spacious hallway, at the end of which lies what was once the ballroom, now repurposed as an amply proportioned living room complete with a green marble fireplace and large windows overlooking the terrace.

Elsewhere on the main story can be found a study, a boot room, a formal dining room, and a recently renovated kitchen. Upstairs, you’ll find six stately bedrooms, as well as another sitting room with views out over the 10.5-acre grounds.

The home was for sale via The Modern House for just below £4 million, equivalent to $5.4 million.

Sotheby's International Realty

alinghi, Queensland, Australia

This stately abode in Queensland, Australia has been voted one of the top five beach houses in the world. Hidden within 14 acres of native bushland, the home provides the ultimate privacy and tranquility, with views out over the breathtaking Honeymoon Bay.

The home, which is known as 'alinghi', was designed by architect James Grose, who endeavored to create the sensation of gliding above the Pacific Ocean.

Sotheby's International Realty

alinghi: Art Deco antecedents

Architecturally speaking, alinghi also draws much of its inspiration from Art Deco antecedents, with its boxy silhouette, geometric outlines, and sleek interiors.

The home is divided into two pavilions, connected by a travertine terrace hemmed in by reflecting pools to create a seamless transition between inside and outside.

The primary pavilion hosts the living and dining area, as well as the gourmet kitchen. These spill into a semi-enclosed area for eating or lounging al fresco.

Sotheby's International Realty

alinghi: ocean breezes

The secondary pavilion houses the master suite and private bathroom, which boast spectacular ocean views and natural sea breezes. There is also an adjoining flexible wellness space or study.

With the clean lines and geometric silhouettes intrinsic to the Art Deco style, this home is brilliantly engineered to act as a frame for the surrounding natural beauty of greenery and the ocean.

Alinghi was previously for sale via Sotheby's International Realty for an undisclosed sum.
