Feeling hungry? Click or scroll our gallery to discover Canada’s best joints slinging flavour-packed patties.

We've based our ranking on the reviews, awards and accolades of each restaurant, and on the opinions of our well-travelled (and well-fed) team. The list is unavoidably subjective.

JacksBurgerShack/Facebook

Alberta: Jack’s Burger Shack, Edmonton and St. Albert

Serving the St. Albert community since 2013, Jack’s Burger Shack has garnered a loyal following for its hand-cut fries, house-made sauces and freshly baked buns. The joint, which opened a second branch in downtown Edmonton in 2022, serves up some brilliant burger options that customers continue to return for. Fans love the BBQ Crunch, a juicy burger topped with cheese, bacon, barbecue sauce and potato chips, and the Quebecer, a poutine-inspired spin on a burger with fries, gravy, cheese curds and ranch all piled onto a patty.

between2bunsburgers/Facebook

British Columbia: Between 2 Buns, Vancouver

In a city as vast and vibrant as Vancouver, hunting down the best burger is no mean feat, but Between 2 Buns is regularly crowned a favourite by many regional magazines and food blogs. The team serves up exceptional smash burgers time and time again, with fans claiming the Double Cheese is the one to order. A messy, meaty mountain, it sees a brioche bun stuffed with two smashed patties, pickles, shredded lettuce and house sauce.

TEXXBIGBURGER/Facebook

British Columbia: Texx Big Burger, Surrey

This no-frills joint is renowned for its gigantic, loaded burgers, and rightly so, they’re delicious! Texx Big Burger has been a part of the Surrey burger scene since 2011, and over a decade later, fans return for the Texx Burger. The signature patty can be customised any which way you like; choose between a single, double or triple and pile on the toppings, which are limitless and free – think grilled mushrooms, pickles and jalapeños. The house fries, which come by the pound, are worth ordering, too.

dairydelightwinnipeg/Instagram

Manitoba: Dairy Delight, Winnipeg

It may be an ice cream parlour, but Dairy Delight is known by burger purists as one of the top joints for patties in Winnipeg. Family-owned since 1996, the spot has legions of fans who love the old-school vibe of the place, complete with an illuminated menu above the counter and friendly staff. It’s the Fat Boy, a Winnipeg speciality with a beef patty, mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, pickles, American cheese, tomato and house chilli sauce, that you really want to sink your teeth into.

TheBurgerPlace/Facebook

Manitoba: The Burger Place, Winnipeg

Home of all-Canadian beef patties seasoned to perfection and hand-cut fries made from Manitoba Russet potatoes, The Burger Place has been fuelling Winnipeg’s burger fiends since 1987. Now with two locations, the place is loved for its array of choices. Opt for the Classic, which sees a beef patty loaded with cheese, house-made chilli, mustard, chopped onions and pickles, or munch through the Mushroom: a meaty burger topped with mozzarella, mushrooms, bacon, onions, gravy, garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato.

janessevenburgers/Facebook

New Brunswick: Jane’s Seven Burgers, Oromocto

Whether you’re after a classic Cheddar and bacon number or a meal with a fiery Korean twist, Jane’s Seven Burgers ticks all of the right boxes. This popular Oromocto haunt opened its doors in 2018 and quickly garnered a loyal following thanks to its scratch-made burgers and charming hospitality. The menu is small but mighty, lined with dishes that locals can’t get enough of. Try the K-Burger: a hand-pressed patty piled with house-made kimchi, bacon, avocado, mozzarella, lettuce and chilli mayonnaise.

johnnyandmaes/Instagram

Newfoundland and Labrador: Johnny Mae’s, Mount Pearl

Mighty burgers that are almost too big to eat are the order of the day at Johnny Mae’s, a thriving food truck currently located at Landwash Brewery in Mount Pearl. The joint has a reputation for its seriously messy patties, piled high with mountains of toppings and innovative flavours. Expect everything from the Poutine Burger (beef patty, mozzarella, pork belly, cheese curds, curly fries, gravy and mayonnaise) to the Big Mae (fried chicken burger with shredded lettuce, pickles and mayonnaise).

NWTBrewing/Facebook

Northwest Territories: The Woodyard, Yellowknife

Ask anyone in Yellowknife and they’ll tell you that this brewhouse serves up some of the best burgers in the city. It’s the Shack Burger that customers keep coming back for – a perfectly prepared smashed chuck beef patty finished with tomato, lettuce, dill pickles and garlic aioli. It’s worth paying for the extra toppings, too, from creamy peanut butter to smoky Cheddar. Order a side of mac ’n’ cheese, studded with curds and pickled jalapeños, to take your meal to a new level of indulgence.

kraveburger/Facebook

Nova Scotia: Krave, Dartmouth and Halifax

With a menu stacked with mac ’n’ cheese, milkshakes and hefty burgers, Krave is fast food at its finest. The joint, which boasts a location in Dartmouth and another in Halifax, is famous for its meaty meals. Regulars say you can’t beat the Bacon & Blue, loaded with creamy blue cheese, crispy bacon, sautéed mushrooms, Dijon mustard and garlic mayonnaise. The Jerk Chicken Burger, with grilled pineapple, banana peppers, red onion and jerk seasoned mayonnaise, is well worth sampling, too.

HuntersMarketIqaluit/Facebook

Nunavut: Hunter’s Market, Iqaluit

A convenience store isn’t perhaps where you’d expect to find brilliant burgers, but that just adds to the charm of Hunter’s Market. This laid-back spot offers some of the best takeout options in Iqaluit, and locals say you can’t fault the burgers. Go classic with a hamburger or cheeseburger, or try the Hot Hamburger Sandwich, which comes smothered with rich gravy. The souvlaki platters, with a choice of grilled chicken, pork, beef or donair, come highly rated, too.

olympusburgerporthope/Facebook

Ontario: Olympus Burger, Port Hope

Consistently rated one of the best burger spots in Canada, Olympus Burger serves up what they describe as ‘fresh gourmet burgers with an ancient Greek twist’. The spot opened its doors in 2013 and offers flavour-packed patties, each named after Greek gods. Favourites include the Zeus (a beef patty with bacon, caramelized onions, mushrooms, Cheddar, house-made barbecue sauce and salad), the Athena (a lamb-based mix with roasted peppers, feta and salad) and the Demeter (a black bean burger with Swiss cheese, salad and caramelized onions). There’s also a secret menu you can order from, visible only on the website.

Ontario: Deluxe Hamburgers, Sudbury

cabanos.cheeseburgers/Instagram

Ontario: Cabano’s Cheeseburgers, Toronto

No burger brand in Toronto comes as highly rated as this fast food gem, which is famed for its stacked cheeseburgers and thick-cut, beef tallow fries. Every menu item is perfectly prepared, with the juicy patties served smashed, with crispy edges and melty cheese draped over. The signature Cabano Burger comes complete with two patties topped with cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced onion, fried jalapeños and house burger sauce. The fried chicken sandwiches and spiced cheese fries are also said to be incredible.

backwoodsburger/Facebook

Prince Edward Island: Backwoods Burger, various locations

Diving into a heavily stacked patty from this rustic joint is a messy affair, but it’s well worth conquering for one of the juiciest, most flavourful options in PEI. Backwoods Burger, which boasts four locations, serves up 10 impressive options, most of which come with a choice of a single, double or triple patty. The Return of The Mac sees the beef topped with house-made mac ’n’ cheese, onion straws, bacon and lettuce, all sandwiched inside a toasted bun. Fans say it’s worth ordering the clam-piled poutine, too.

holycowpei/Facebook

Prince Edward Island: Holy Cow Burgers & Wings, Morell

Messy poutine, seafood platters, spicy wings and enormous burgers keep regulars raving about this Morell joint. The team is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and the food is exceptional. There are multiple menu favourites, though many say you can’t beat the bacon cheeseburger, smothered with ‘the works’ (lettuce, tomato, pickles, fried onions, mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup). Look out for the regularly changing specials, too.

chezsimoncantineurbaine/Facebook

Quebec: Chez Simon Cantine Urbaine, Montreal

A fairly new joint on the block, this burger dive quickly garnered a loyal following for its smash burgers, saucy poutine and innovative hot dogs. Set up in 2021 by Simon Jodoin Bouchard and his partner, the space is inspired by fast foods from America's southern states, so expect the portions to be big, messy and downright delicious. Chez Simon Cantine Urbaine now boasts multiple locations across Montreal, with the Bacon + Bacon Burger (double patty with Cheddar, dill pickles, lettuce, diced onion and house sauce) a firm fan favourite.

labelleetlaboeuf/Facebook

Quebec: La Belle et La Boeuf, various locations

Proving burgers can be more than just beef and bun, La Belle et La Boeuf is a Quebec-based restaurant chain specializing in innovative flavours and toppings. The group is known for its over-the-top branding and theatrical décor, while the burger offerings are equally extreme. Highlights include the Philly (beef patty, Philly steak, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, roasted tomatoes and cheese sauce) and the Super Pac Mac: a beef patty, Cheddar, bacon, mac ’n’ cheese, caramelized onions, cheese sauce, mayo and onion are sandwiched between two fried mac ’n’ cheese–shaped buns.

goblinsgrill/Facebook

Saskatchewan: Goblin’s Grill, Saskatoon

Transforming the Saskatoon burger scene since 2022, Goblin’s Grill offers fast food favourites done exceptionally well. The staff are friendly, and the space is decked out with fun gallery walls and goblin statues, but it’s the food that’s the real star of the show. The Rink Burger, piled with ketchup, mustard, house pickles, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato, is well worth seeking out, as is the War Pig, a meaty combination of bacon three ways, fried onions and salad.

DirtyNorthernPublicHouse/Facebook

Yukon: Dirty Northern, Whitehorse

You’ll find bison burgers making an appearance on most menus across Yukon, but Dirty Northern’s offering comes especially highly rated. The neighbourhood pub serves an irresistibly delicious bison patty, finished with aged Cheddar, tomato, garlic aioli, arugula and balsamic onion jam. Served with house fries, it’s hard to beat. The spot, known for its live music nights, dishes up an equally tasty wild Alaskan salmon burger, topped with wasabi mayonnaise, avocado and salad.
