The Michael Group

Houses with extra safe hideouts included

Our houses are filled with amazing features, but with security more important to homeowners than ever, it's no wonder that private survival shelters are fast becoming a property must-have.

From a rural home in Kansas with a Cold War missile silo in its backyard to a luxury property in Texas with a fallout shelter hidden behind a bookcase, these residences each come complete with an impenetrable hideaway.

Click or scroll on to step inside these ultra-safe properties...

The Michael Group

Gated estate, Texas, USA: $679,900

Providing quiet, country living at its best, this custom-built home lies within a gated community in Glen Rose, Texas.

Enclosed by more than three acres, the property backs onto Squaw Creek and features everything you could need to go off-grid and live off the land.

The Michael Group

Gated estate, Texas, USA: $679,900

The main house was finished in 2011 and spans 3,335 square feet. It comes complete with spacious living areas, including a family room, dining room, kitchen, and study.

There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms in total, as well as a laundry room. Modern and bright, the property looks freshly renovated and is entirely move-in ready. Wood floors, custom built-ins, and elegant fireplaces add to its charm.

There’s also a generously proportioned three-car garage that comes with a secret. Built into the concrete floor is an underground storm shelter.

This compact, ultra-secure steel door is all that can be seen from the outside. While we can't step inside, we're sure the subterranean space would be large enough for a few people and perhaps a bathroom.

Gated estate, Texas, USA: $679,900

With abundant land, a private creek and a few outbuildings waiting to be put to use, this gated home would be perfect for anyone seeking a secure, secluded, and safe place to see out their days.

For sale with The Michael Group, the property is priced at $679,900.

Sharon Hubbard/RE/MAX Connections

Home with a missile silo, Kansas, USA: $699,900

This workshop-style building might look a little unassuming from the outside, but it is far more than initially meets the eye.

The Quonset hut sits on a 23-acre site in Allen, Kansas, and is harboring a cozy home, as well as one seriously amazing backyard feature...

Home with a missile silo, Kansas, USA: $699,900

Stepping inside the home, you'll find a bright and spacious 4,000-square-foot interior, complete with an open-plan living area, eat-in kitchen, one bedroom, and one bathroom. There's also a laundry space.

The Quonset hut also provides an attached garage space, making this property ideal for anyone looking to keep themselves to themselves. But it's all about what's going on outside...

Sharon Hubbard/RE/MAX Connections

Home with a missile silo, Kansas, USA: $699,900

That's right, the backyard is home to a historic Atlas E missile silo. Extremely rare, it's thought that only 27 similar military bunkers were built in the 1960s, during the Cold War. This mammoth underground facility was designed to house an Atlas E missile and was constructed, like all similar bases, to withstand a one-megaton airburst from a distance of up to 1.6 miles.

Super secure, with steel blast doors and impenetrable concrete walls, the bunker is further protected by a chain link and barbed wire fence that spans the perimeter of the estate.

Inside, the silo looks like it hasn't been touched in decades. There's a spooky entrance tunnel and countless vast rooms waiting to be renovated.

Of course, there are no windows, but there's endless space for a living room, kitchen, and multiple bedrooms, since the bunker sprawls a staggering 15,000 square feet. For sale with RE/MAX Connections, the home is listed for $699,900.

There are plenty of surprises, too. For starters, there’s a games room, a movie theater, and a bar in the basement. Yet the home’s most exciting feature is hiding in this room.

If you look closely at the bookcase, you might just be able to spot a secret doorway, leading into a hidden vault.

The secure room comes equipped with a wine vault with custom storage, but the space doubles as a tornado bunker. Heavily secured, the safe room would be perfect for seeing out a natural disaster or for storing your valuables safely.

If you're keen on the place, then Lanae Humbles and Robyn Eastman of Twenty-Two Realty hold the $1.1 million listing. Check out the TREC Consumer Protection Notice and TREC Information About Brokerage Services for more details.

Tomlinson Sotheby's International Realty

The Fortress, Washington, USA: $1.3 million

Over in Chattaroy, Washington, you'll find a home that was named The Fortress – and for good reason. The property was originally built and owned by the notorious CV Meyers, who had an anti-government publication in the 1970s.

According to listing agent Amy Delducco, he had quite the following at the time and wasn't short on money. It is said that he was hoarding gold when it was illegal, and he ended up in jail for tax evasion. But Meyers certainly knew how to create an impenetrable home...

The Fortress, Washington, USA: $1.3 million

For the build, Meyers hired architect Tim Rundquist of Rundquist & Associates. Built on high ground, no doubt to make the most of the view and to keep an eye on anyone approaching the property, the 4,400-square-foot home features cozy and rustic living spaces, with enormous windows, wooden beams, and Montana travertine fireplaces.

There are five bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as numerous sitting areas for taking in far-reaching scenery.

Yet the home's most unusual feature can be found in the basement. Here, you'll find a spacious bunker, which was originally designed as a fallout shelter.

The secure underground bunker has a bathroom and an additional living space, but could easily accommodate two or more bedrooms, if desired.

Amazingly, the basement also comes with an indoor, 20-yard gun range that is perfect for target practice. With concrete walls, floors, and ceilings, the bunker would surely keep any occupants safe during a bomb scare.

Elsewhere, you'll find a shop with disabled access, a four-stall barn, two corrals, a swimming pool, a backyard shed, and a well. For sale with Tomlinson Sotheby's International Realty, the home is priced at a very reasonable $1.3 million.

River Fox Realty/Survival Realty

Modern mansion, Virginia, USA: $2.5 million

Described in the listing as "where timeless luxury meets state-of-the-art innovation", this 11,000-square-foot mansion is located between Washington D.C. and Richmond.

The vast single-family home is set on a secluded 21-acre estate, perfect for a high-profile household looking for the ultimate private retreat.

River Fox Realty/Survival Realty

Modern mansion, Virginia, USA: $2.5 million

There are eight bedrooms and six bathrooms in total. The main level houses the primary suite with a private bathroom, plus four large bedrooms, Jack and Jill baths, an office, and a laundry. The lower level has an additional bedroom, a gym, a media room, and a bar.

An attached in-law suite has two more bedrooms, a full kitchen, a living/dining area, and an elevator for future-proof accessibility.

Modern mansion, Virginia, USA: $2.5 million

The hub of the home is a soaring two-story great room with a 72-inch gas fireplace, numerous custom built-ins, and walls of glass featuring motorized shades providing privacy at the touch of a button.

The open-plan space also boasts a chef's kitchen with gleaming white quartzite countertops, top-of-the-range appliances, and a hidden butler's pantry. But that's not the only clandestine feature...

River Fox Realty/Survival Realty

Modern mansion, Virginia, USA: $2.5 million

All this comes with the peace of mind of a six-sided, 10-inch-thick concrete safe room. We're not exactly sure how big it is or where the access is, making it ultra secure. If that wasn't enough, the $30,000 ADT security system with 19 cameras, five smart locks, and surveillance on more than 50 access points should help the occupiers sleep soundly at night.

Outside, there's a 1-acre stocked pond, a private 225-yard shooting range complete with berms and steel targets, and a Quonset hut for extra storage. All this is available via River Fox Realty for $2.5 million.
