Easy ways to streamline your sleep space

Learning how to organize your bedroom will ensure every inch of your room is utilized, without it becoming cluttered chaos. From space-saving toiletry tricks to using wardrobes effectively, here’s how to get the most out of bedroom storage, so you can enjoy your space as the calming sanctuary it should be.

Declutter to create calm

The first rule of bedroom organizing is to have a good sort-out before you start. Once you've tackled filtering out what is and isn't needed, you'll have less to organize and put away.

To declutter your home for good, go through clothes, make-up, jewelry, books and tech to decide what can be kept, donated, stored or thrown away. Then, sort the remainder into sections: those needed and used regularly and those not. You can then organize these accordingly.

Keep nightstands clear

Optimise the surface space on your bedside tables by installing reading lights on the wall beside the headboard. Get an electrician to install them professionally, or opt for plug-in options to wall mount. Ceiling pendants work beautifully, too.

Or, why not cheat by adding battery-operated lights that don't need to be connected to electricity? This will also solve the issue of visible ugly wires. You can buy some stylish stick-on, battery-operated sconces online.

Think slim, vertical storage

A narrow, vertical storage unit will take up minimal space but provide maximum storage for everything from books and accessories to shoes and hats. Place small boxes and dishes on the shelves for storing and organizing trinkets and fiddly items.

Consider installing it right next to the bed, so it's easy to grab what you need.

Turn to drawer organizers

Once you've got bedside table surfaces organized, it's time to concentrate on the drawers. To keep belongings neat and in their place, add drawer organizers. Many options are available, from fabric boxes with multiple sections to individual containers that can sit side by side.

Prefer to make your own DIY versions? There are lots of creative ideas to try: cardboard cake boxes are generally small and can be arranged in lines close together, or cut off the bottom of cereal boxes to do the same.

Rethink the wardrobes

Make the most of a large and airy wardrobe by placing chests of drawers inside. Not only will it make the most of bedroom floor space, but it will create a generous amount of extra storage.

If you opt for built-in wardrobes, opt for two hanging rails, installed to utilize every inch. Match the hangers for a streamlined and organized finish.

Roll in under bed storage

Under-bed storage will allow you to make the most of every inch of bedroom floor space. Do your research when purchasing a bed, as there are often drawers designed to match or be concealed perfectly underneath.

Use this space for items you don't use as regularly, such as winter jumpers, bed linen or extra pillows. Choose pull-out drawers on wheels to make items super easy to reach.

Be inspired by professionals

When organizing a closet or wardrobe, there are a few favorites professionals stick to. Lauren Cunningham of Everyday Organize swears by wooden hangers or budget-friendly and slimline velvet versions.

Labeled storage bins and hat, purse and handbag organizers are also firm favorites and can be hung on the back of wardrobe doors for extra space-saving.

Pick out clear storage

Clear storage bins are versatile and user-friendly. For a streamlined and color-coordinated vibe, be selective when choosing what goes inside. Stackable versions are practical too and look super neat. Organizing queen Marie Kondo will be proud!

Work in a window bench

If you're lucky enough to have a bay window in your bedroom, why not utilize the space by adding a window seat with concealed storage beneath?

The extra space can be used to organize linens, blankets and pillows, while the upholstered top will offer a sunny nook to perch on.

Store styling appliances

Fed up of heated styling appliances hanging around to cool down? Give hairdryers, curling wands and straightening irons a place to live, even when hot, with a dedicated tabletop rack.

A metal version will allow them to cool quickly when you've finished. Then, they'll be ready and waiting for tomorrow's hairdo. You can also buy storage units for hair brushes, lotions and other essentials.

Opt for an ottoman

If you have the space, an ottoman placed at the end of a bed can conceal folded linens and blankets, as well as create additional seating.

Don't get into the habit of leaving items and clothes on top of the bench to put away later, though, as this may attract more clutter.

Choose your bed well

Take the idea up a notch and invest in a storage bed instead. You can buy beds with a bottom-lift, gas-powered ottoman that makes accessing your under-bed space quick and easy.

Ideal for items you don't use every day, such as seasonal items, it's a clever way to keep your bedroom looking stylish but serene.

Pick functional furniture

Built-in storage is a space-saver, but can often look mainstream. For a functional bedroom with character, well-chosen, standalone furniture can keep the room just as organized.

A large chest with different-sized drawers will house all your needs when organized to the max and fitted with practical organizers.

Utilize space above the bed

The space above a bed is often wasted but can be made practical with shelves. Ensure they are functional as well as aesthetic by using them to store useful items, such as books you are currently reading, a nightlight or pretty skincare jars.

Team with display items such as prints and plants for a textural balance. If you fancy spending a little extra, an above-bed cupboard can look fantastic.

Consider a walk-in wardrobe

If you have a large bedroom, an extra guest bedroom or a box room, consider building the ultimate walk-in wardrobe. An extra-large cupboard chock-full of organizing hacks will make the most of a compact space.

A dream dressing room maxed out with storage solutions, for everything from shoes to coats, won't disappoint even the strictest neat freaks.

Bring in baskets for blankets

Looking for country decorating ideas when organizing the bedroom? It's safe to say you can never have too many baskets made from natural materials.

Stored at the end of a bed, above a wardrobe or displayed on shelves, jute, wicker or seagrass baskets will create an authentic extra storage solution to keep blankets, clothing and shoes organized.

Don't forget the door

The space behind internal bedroom doors is often easily wasted, but it is the ideal spot for a few extra organizing ideas. Place a mirror on the wall next to the door at face height. Then, fit an over-door shelf to house hair and beauty products or items you use regularly.

Hooks added at different levels will keep scarves, bags or dressing gowns orderly and within easy reach.

Coordinate dressing table drawers

An organized dressing table will ensure your morning and bedtime routines are kept to schedule. Fill drawers with organizers to separate make-up, application tools, skincare and haircare in an orderly fashion.

Keep jewelry safe

With make-up organized in drawers, the dressing table surface can then be kept clutter-free to organize treasured and attractive items.

A tiered trinket tree is ideal for storing delicate jewellery and small accessories that might otherwise get lost.

Organize laundry day

Pop a laundry basket in each bedroom in the house to keep on top of the washing. This will encourage family members to muck in.

Plus, bedroom floors are more likely to stay clear and orderly, rather than strewn with yesterday's clothes. Why not be ultra-organized by choosing a laundry basket that separates lights and darks?

Indulge in fitted wardrobes

Fitted wardrobes are a luxurious storage solution that offers a maximum amount of space to organize. The beauty is that when purchasing, an expert will plan a design to suit your needs, personal style and organization methods.

Once items are grouped and gathered, streamlined doors will hide everything to create a clutter-free and calming bedroom sanctuary.

Build DIY wardrobes

Buying bespoke fitted wardrobes can be a pricey project, so if you're on a budget and have some DIY skills, you could create your own. Conjure up an expensive-looking wardrobe look for less, with a genius IKEA hack.

By putting affordable IKEA storage units together, fixing them to the wall and adding doors, you can create an amazing finish. There are plenty of DIY videos out there to show you how to do it.
