The Canadian rockers' fortunes revealed

Blending progressive rock with hard rock, heavy metal, and later synth-driven sounds, Rush are among Canada's biggest musical exports.

Formed in Toronto in 1968, the band found their classic line-up with Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart, and have sold more than 40 million records over four decades. Albums such as 2112 and Moving Pictures, along with enduring tracks including Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio, have earned Rush a devoted global following and a place among rock's most influential acts.

Rush's early members: no reliable estimates

Before Rush's classic power trio took shape, several musicians passed through the band's ranks. Original bassist and vocalist Jeff Jones (pictured) left shortly after Rush's formation due to commuting issues, while founding drummer John Rutsey remained until 1974 and played on the group's self-titled debut album.

Multi-instrumentalist Lindy Young and bassist Joe Perna followed during the band's early period, with Perna briefly replacing Geddy Lee. Guitarists Bob Vopni and Mitch Bossi also had short stints as Rush members.

Neil Peart: $40 million net worth at time of his death

Neil Peart began drumming lessons at 13 and played in several local bands before pursuing music as a career. His big break came in 1974 when he replaced founding Rush drummer John Rutsey just before the band's first major US tour.

Peart fast became Rush's principal lyricist as well as its drummer, helping shape the group's increasingly ambitious sound. His technical prowess and elaborate solos eventually made him one of rock's most celebrated drummers.

Away from Rush, Peart produced the Burning for Buddy tribute albums and became a prolific author, writing books inspired by travel, music and motorcycling. He also released instructional drumming videos and continued studying his craft throughout his career.

After the R40 tour, Peart retired from music and stepped back from public life to spend more time with his family.

Sadly, the drumming legend died in 2020 aged 67 after bravely fighting brain cancer for three-and-a-half years. At the time, his net worth was pegged at $40 million.

Alex Lifeson: $40 million

Obsessed with music from an early age, Alex Lifeson went on to argue with his parents about leaving high school to play guitar professionally. In 1968, he co-founded the group that became Rush alongside drummer John Rutsey, with his friend Geddy Lee soon joining on bass and vocals.

Lifeson has remained as the band's guitarist throughout its remarkable career, with his distinctive riffs, unusual chord structures, and experimental use of effects intrinsic to the Rush sound.

Beyond Rush, Lifeson released solo album Victor in 1996 and later co-founded Envy of None. He's also worked as a producer, acted in noughties mockumentary sitcom Trailer Park Boys, and was a part-owner of Toronto's Orbit Room.

Meanwhile, the star guitarist has amassed an impressive real estate portfolio, with property in Florida and near Toronto. On the road again, he recently reunited as Rush with Geddy Lee for the Fifty Something global tour, with the duo joined by German drummer Anika Nilles and keyboard player Loren Gold.

Geddy Lee: $50 million

Mirroring his bandmates, Geddy Lee was mad about music from childhood. He ended up dropping out of high school to follow his dream and began playing paying gigs with local bands.

In 1968, childhood friend Alex Lifeson invited him to join Rush, where his distinctive high-register vocals, virtuosic bass playing, and keyboard skills helped nail the band's signature sound. Lee's innovative style would go on to influence generations of rock and metal musicians.

Away from Rush, Lee put out solo album My Favourite Headache in 2000 and later turned to writing, publishing a book about bass guitars and his 2023 memoir My Effin' Life.

The rock veteran is also an avid collector, amassing hundreds of vintage basses, luxury watches, bottles of fine wine, and valuable baseball memorabilia. Part of his sports collection was in fact auctioned by Christie's in 2023, bringing in a cool $6.9 million.
