The comedy great's multimillion-dollar legacy

Charlie Chaplin rose from grinding poverty in Victorian London to become one of Hollywood's richest and most recognizable stars. Charlie Chaplin escapes poverty

Born in South London, England, in 1889, Charlie Chaplin endured a desperately poor childhood. His parents were music hall performers, but his father's alcoholism and his mother's deteriorating health left the family destitute. Aged just seven, Charlie was sent to a workhouse with his older half-brother Sydney.

Determined to escape poverty, Charlie set his sights on a stage career. He eventually joined Fred Karno's comedy troupe, where he wowed audiences. A tour of America led to a Hollywood contract in 1913, putting him on the path to extraordinary fame and fortune.

Charlie Chaplin strikes it rich in Hollywood

Charlie's earnings skyrocketed as his popularity grew. In 1913, he was paid $150 a week by Keystone Studios, equivalent to $5,100 now.

He was Hollywood's highest-paid actor by 1916, earning an astonishing $670,000 a year. That's around $21 million in today's money. The following year, he signed an eight-movie deal with First National worth a cool million dollars, which translates to $26 million in 2026.

In 1919, Charlie co-founded United Artists. The venture was a shrewd move that gave him greater creative and financial control, allowing him to retain profits that would otherwise have gone to the studios.

Charlie Chaplin's superstardom and marriages

Charlie's career flourished during the 1920s and 1930s, with classics including The Kid, The Gold Rush, City Lights, and Modern Times. But his private life was considerably more turbulent. His first son, Norman, died three days after his birth in 1919. His second marriage to actress Lita Grey produced two sons, Charles Jr and Sydney, but ended in a scandalous divorce.

Following a third marriage to actress Paulette Goddard, Chaplin wed 18-year-old Oona O'Neill in 1943. He was 54.

The Chaplins move to Switzerland

Oona gave birth to the couple's first child Geraldine in 1944, followed by Michael, Josephine, and Victoria. Meanwhile, Chaplin's left-wing sympathies had made the screen icon a target of America's anti-communist hysteria. In 1952, US authorities revoked his re-entry permit while he was traveling abroad.

Charlie settled with his growing family at the Manoir de Ban, a luxurious Swiss estate overlooking Lake Geneva. Four more children followed: Eugene, Jane, Annette, and finally Christopher, who was born in 1962.

The richest tramp in the world

Charlie's famous Little Tramp character might have been penniless, but the man behind the bowler hat and toothbrush moustache was fabulously wealthy. The icon of cinema died on Christmas Day 1977, aged 88, leaving behind an estimated $100 million fortune, equivalent to over $550 million today.

Despite having nine surviving children, Charlie left the bulk of his fortune to Oona rather than dividing it among his offspring. So what did his kids actually inherit?

Oona Chaplin's millions

Oona was just 52 when Charlie died, leaving her in control of his enormous fortune. She continued living at the family's lavish Swiss estate and managed her husband's legacy until her own death in 1991, aged only 66.

She also helped out her stepson Sydney financially, giving him $500,000 to open a restaurant in Palm Springs, California. Aptly named Chaplin's, the establishment became a celebrity hangout before closing in the early 1990s.

What happened to Oona's millions?

Following Oona's death, her eight children inherited the Manoir de Ban. They also retained an interest in their father's lucrative legacy, including valuable film copyrights and commercial rights associated with his famous Little Tramp character.

Yet the precise division of Oona's wider fortune has not been publicly documented, so it's unclear exactly how much each child received. The mansion eventually became the Chaplin's World museum, while the family continues to oversee Charlie's commercial legacy.

The son who missed out

Charlie's eldest surviving son Charles Jr followed his father into acting, appearing in several films during the 1950s alongside his famous dad. He also published a memoir in 1960 titled My Father, Charlie Chaplin, offering a candid account of growing up in the shadow of a Hollywood legend.

Tragically, Charles Jr died from a pulmonary embolism in 1968 at the age of just 42, nine years before his father. He therefore never lived to see how Charlie's enormous fortune would be distributed.

Broadway actor and restaurateur Sydney Chaplin

Born in 1926, Sydney followed his father into showbusiness and even appeared alongside him in 1952's Limelight together with Charles Jr. He enjoyed greater success on Broadway, winning a Tony Award for Bells Are Ringing in 1957 and starring opposite Barbra Streisand in 1964's Funny Girl.

As we've mentioned, Sydney later received half a million dollars from his stepmother Oona to open the Palm Springs restaurant. Although his personal fortune was never disclosed, he enjoyed a comfortable retirement in California before dying in 2009 at the age of 82.

Global screen star Geraldine Chaplin

Geraldine is arguably the most successful of Chaplin's children. Born in 1944, she shot to global stardom at age 20 in Doctor Zhivago and has gone on to enjoy a prolific international acting career, appearing in Nashville, Chaplin, and The Crown. The acclaimed actress has also worked extensively in Spanish cinema, winning a Goya Award in 2003.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Geraldine has amassed a $20 million fortune. However, it's unclear how much of the total derives from her father's estate.

Rebellious heir Michael Chaplin

Michael was born in 1946 and appeared alongside his father in 1957's A King in New York, but struggled with the pressures of being a Chaplin. He rebelled against his privileged upbringing, experimented with music and acting, and eventually spent years running a goat farm in France.

Michael later turned to writing, publishing his debut novel, A Fallen God, in 2024. His personal fortune remains undisclosed, though he certainly isn't hard-up. Now 80, he lives in Switzerland and has eight children of his own.

Arthouse actress and businesswoman Josephine Chaplin

Josephine was Charlie's sixth child and was born in 1949. She also followed her father into acting, appearing in his films Limelight and 1967's A Countess from Hong Kong. She later carved out a niche in European arthouse and cult cinema, working with the likes of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Jess Franco.

Josephine also played a significant role in managing the family fortune, running the Chaplin Office in Paris on behalf of her siblings for many years, though her personal fortune was never made public. She died in Paris in 2023 at the age of 74, leaving three sons.

Circus trailblazer Victoria Chaplin

Born in 1951, Victoria took an unconventional route into showbusiness that nodded to her father's slapstick comedy. She eloped with French actor Jean-Baptiste Thierrée in 1969, abandoning plans to star in her father's unfinished film The Freak. The couple went on to pioneer a new style of circus entertainment, combining acrobatics, mime, illusion, and surreal comedy.

Their acclaimed Le Cirque Invisible toured internationally for decades, while their children, Aurélia, and James, became successful performers in their own right. Despite this enduring family enterprise, Victoria's net worth remains undisclosed.

Legendary sound engineer Eugene Chaplin

Named after his maternal grandfather, playwright Eugene came into the world two years after Victoria. Rather than pursue acting, he became a sound engineer at the legendary Mountain Studios in Montreux, working with some of music's biggest names, including David Bowie, Queen, and the Rolling Stones.

He later branched out into circus productions, documentaries, and musical shows celebrating his father's legacy. Eugene has also helped promote the Chaplin's World museum at the family's former Swiss estate. Again, no reliable public estimate of his fortune exists.

Hollywood producer and actress Jane Chaplin

Born in 1957, Jane entered the movie industry, working for acclaimed director Miloš Forman in New York during the late 1970s. She later married Hollywood producer Ilya Salkind – whose credits include the blockbuster Superman films – and worked with him in Florida. Jane has also appeared in several films, including 1990's The Rainbow Thief, and served as an executive producer on 1992's Christopher Columbus: The Discovery.

The couple had two children before divorcing in 1999. Jane's net worth has never been made public.

Thespian and equestrian Annette Chaplin

Annette was born in 1959. Known as Annie, she cultivated a notable career in theater, performing in productions including Shirley Valentine and Jean Anouilh's La Belle Vie. With her husband, director Jacques Auxenel, she transformed a former grain silo in the French countryside into a theater specializing in modern comedies.

Away from the stage, Annette has devoted much of her time to breeding and riding Arabian and Swiss Franches-Montagnes horses. Her theatrical ventures and equestrian interests suggest an eviable lifestyle, although her personal wealth remains a mystery.

Avant-garde musician and actor Christopher Chaplin

Charlie's youngest child Christopher was born in 1962, when his father was 73. Like most of his siblings, he initially opted for an acting career, appearing in films including 1984's Where Is Parsifal? and 1991's Labyrinth, before finding his calling in experimental music. The classically trained pianist has released several albums blending electronic, orchestral, and avant-garde sounds.

Christopher has also collaborated with influential German electronic musician Hans-Joachim Roedelius and performed internationally. His earnings from acting, recordings, and live performances are unknown, while any share of the family inheritance has been kept private.

Charlie Chaplin's multimillionaire granddaughters

Charlie's granddaughter Oona (pictured), named after her grandmother, is among the family's biggest stars. The daughter of Geraldine Chaplin, she shot to fame in Game of Thrones and has since appeared in Taboo and Avatar: Fire and Ash. Celebrity Net Worth pegs her net worth at $10 million.

Oona's cousin Kiera, daughter of Eugene Chaplin, has an estimated $10 million to her name as well. A successful model, she's worked with Armani and Tommy Hilfiger and appeared in Vogue. She's also ventured into business, investing in fashion, beauty, and film production.

The Chaplin family's lucrative legacy

Charlie's descendants continue to oversee his commercial empire through the Paris-based Chaplin Office. Roy Export controls the rights to the classic movies, while Bubbles Incorporated handles rights to his name, image and famous Little Tramp character.

According to the official Chaplin Archive, Charlie and Oona's surviving children make major decisions concerning the family businesses, museum, and other interests. Nearly 50 years after the comedy legend's death, his body of work generates substantial income for his family, a testament to the business savvy that helped make him one of Hollywood's richest stars.
